Programs

Swimming is one of the most important skills we can teach our kids!  Not only is it super fun but it’s also a great way to get in shape and get outside in the summer!

 

The Red Deer Marlins Swim Club is a member of the Alberta Summer Swim Association (ASSA). Practicing at the Michener and Recreation Centre Pools, we practice from May 1 until mid-August and provide coaching in:

 

  • Basic swim skill development
  • Stroke improvement
  • Endurance

 

Traveling or have a busy summer planned?  No worries! Our program has been set up to accommodate busy summer schedules and includes morning, afternoon and evening swim times, optional dryland training for more experienced swimmers and swim meets within Central Alberta.  Come when and as often as you can!

 

Pre-Competitive Program (5-6 year olds)

Our pre-competitive program offers your young swimmer a chance to develop basic swim skills in a low coach to swimmer ratio.  At the end of the season, they will be on their way to swimming 25-meter freestyle, 25-meter backstroke and will begin to develop their breaststroke, butterfly and flip turns.

 

Your swimmer should be comfortable in the water and be able to focus on instruction for the entire lesson.

 

Practice: 3 times/week for 45-minutes in May, increasing to 4 times/week for 1-hour in June – August

 

Introduction to Competitive Swimming (5-8 year olds)

Our introduction to competitive swimming program is designed for swimmers who are proficient at the basic freestyle and backstroke and are able to swim the length of the pool without stopping.  The low coach to swimmer ratio will keep them feeling engaged and give them a chance to develop their skills in all four competitive strokes: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly.  They will also have the opportunity to participate in regional competitions offered throughout the season.

 

Your swimmer must be able to swim 25 meters on their front without stopping.

 

Practice: 4 times/week for 60-minutes

 

Junior Development (5-11 year olds)

Our junior development squads are designed for swimmers who are able to swim 25-meter freestyle proficiently and are progressing in stroke fundamentals.  This program focuses on skills development in all four competitive strokes: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly.  Junior Development swimmers will participate in at least 2 regional competitions during the season.

 

Practice: 4 times/week for 60-minutes in May, increasing to 5 times/week for 60-minutes in June – August

 

Intermediate (7-12 year olds)

Intermediate swimmers are able to perform all four competitive stokes proficiently.  Coaches will work with swimmers to refine the technical aspects of these strokes and help them develop race strategies for competition.  Intermediate swimmers will participate in at least 2 regional competitions during the season. An optional dryland program is available to these swimmers which has been designed to increase strength and reduce the risk of injury.

 

Practice: 4 times/week for 60-90 minutes, increasing to 5 times/week in June and 6 times/week in July – August

Dryland: 1 time/week for 60-minutes

 

Senior (11-18 year olds)

Senior swimmers are able to perform all four competitive strokes with an increased intensity level and will spend the season working through a structured cycle of competitive swimmer development.  Senior swimmers will participate in at least 2 regional competitions during the season. An optional dryland program is available to these swimmers which has been designed to increase strength and reduce the risk of injury.

 

Practice: 5 times/week for 90-minutes in May, increasing to 6 times/week for 90-minutes in June – August

Dryland: 2 times/week for 60-minutes
