Swimming is one of the most important skills we can teach our kids! Not only is it super fun but it’s also a great way to get in shape and get outside in the summer! The Red Deer Marlins Swim Club is a member of the Alberta Summer Swim Association (ASSA). Practicing at the Michener and Recreation Centre pools, we practice from May 1 until mid-August and provide coaching in:
- Basic swim skill development
- Stroke improvement
The Red Deer Marlins swim program was established from Swimming Canada’s Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) guidelines to ensure optimal development in swimming and retention in physical activity for lifelong wellness. Our swim squads take into consideration a swimmer’s age as well as their individual abilities. Final squad placement is at the discretion of the Marlins’ coaching staff.
Mini Marlins (5-6 year olds)
Our pre-competitive program offers your young swimmer a chance to develop basic swim skills in a low coach to swimmer ratio. Your swimmer should be comfortable in the water and be able to focus on instruction for the entire lesson. At the end of the season, they will be on their way to swimming 25-meter freestyle, 25-meter backstroke and may begin to develop their breaststroke, butterfly and flip turns.
Practice: 2 times/week for 45-minutes
Junior (6-11 year olds)
Our junior squads are designed for swimmers who are able to swim 25-meter freestyle proficiently and are progressing in stroke fundamentals. This program focuses on skills development in all four competitive strokes: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly as well as turn technique. Junior swimmers are encouraged to participate in at least 2 regional competitions during the season.
Practice: 4-5 times/week for 60
Intermediate (7-12 year olds)
Intermediate swimmers demonstrate proficiency in all four competitive strokes and turns. Coaches will work with swimmers to refine the technical aspects of these strokes and help them develop race strategies for competition. Intermediate swimmers are encouraged to participate in at least 2 regional competitions during the season.
Practice: 4-6 times/week for 60-90 minutes
Senior (11-18 year olds)
Senior swimmers are able to perform all four competitive strokes with an increased intensity level and will spend the season working through a structured cycle of competitive swimmer development. Senior swimmers are training to compete and are encouraged to participate in at least 2 regional competitions during the season.
Practice: 5-7 times/week for 60-90 minutes
Get Your Feet Wet
Our new “try it” program is perfect for young swimmers who are interested in competitive swimming but don’t want to commit for a full season or are unsure of their swim ability. A 6-week program designed primarily for 6-12-year-olds who can swim 25m unassisted, Get Your Feet Wet focuses on stroke development and basic race strategies. At the end of the 6 week, program participants can compete at the Red Deer Marlins home swim meet! Make sure you invite family and friends to come to cheer them on!
Swimmers wishing to continue after the 6-week program are welcome to stay for the season, with the addition of member obligations such as volunteer, fundraising and bingo commitments.
